Lentamente
los muertos avanzan
hacia el futuro.

En honor al poeta irlandés Seamus Heaney (1939-2013), premio nobel 1995, este pequeñísimo homenaje.
OUT OF THE WORLD
In memory of Czeslaw Milosz
Like everybody else…
Like everybody else, I bowed my head
during the consecration of the bread and wine,
lifted my eyes to the raised host and raised chalice
believed (whatever it means) that a change occurred.
I went to the altar rails and received the mystery
on my tongue, returned to my place, shut my eyes fast, and made
an act of thanksgiving, opened my eyes, and felt
time starting up again.
There was never a scene
when I had it out with myself or with another.
The loss occurred off stage. And yet I cannot
disavow words like ‘thanksgiving’ or ‘host’
or ‘communion bread.’ They have an undying
tremor and draw, like well water far down.
FUERA DE ESTE MUNDO
(Versión Miguel A. Montezanti)
En memoria de Czeslaw
Milosz
Como cualquier otro…
Como cualquier otro,
incliné la cabeza
durante la consagración
del pan y el vino
alcé los ojos hacia la
hostia levantada y el cáliz levantado/
creí (sea lo que sea que
eso signifique) que sucedía un cambio./
Fui hasta el altar)
y recibí el misterio
sobre la lengua, volví a
mi lugar, apreté los ojos, hice
una acción de gracias,
abrí los ojos y sentí
que el tiempo comenzaba
nuevamente.

ACT OF UNION
I
Tonight, a
first movement, a pulse,
As if the
rain in bogland gathered head
To slip and
flood: a bog-burst,
A gash
breaking open the ferny bed.
Your back
is a firm line of eastern coast
And arms
and legs are thrown
Beyond your
gradual hills. I caress
The heaving
province where our past has grown.
I am the
tall kingdom over your shoulder
That you
would neither cajole nor ignore.
Conquest is
a lie. I grow older
Conceding
your half-independant shore
Within
whose borders now my legacy
Culminates
inexorably.
II
And I am
still imperially
Male,
leaving you with pain,
The rending
process in the colony,
The
battering ram, the boom burst from within.
The act
sprouted an obsinate fifth column
Whose
stance is growing unilateral.
His heart
beneath your heart is a wardrum
Mustering
force. His parasitical
And ignmorant
little fists already
Beat at
your borders and I know they're cocked
At me
across the water. No treaty
I foresee
will salve completely your tracked
And
stretchmarked body, the big pain
That leaves
you raw, like opened ground, again
ACTA DE UNIÓN
(Versión de Vicente Forés y Jenaro Talens)
I
Esta noche,
un primer movimiento, un pulso,
como si la
lluvia se acumulase en el pantano
hasta
romper y desbordarse: una presa que estalla,
un tajo
abriendo la cama de helechos.
Tu espalda
e
ignorantes puños pequeños
ya
golpearon tus fronteras y sé que apuntan hacia mí
por encima
del agua. No veo ningún tratado
que ponga a
salvo por completo
tu cuerpo
hollado y estirado, el gran dolor
que, como
campo abierto, te deja en carne viva, una vez más.
Punishment
can feel the tug
of the halter at the nape
of her neck, the wind
on her naked front.
It blows her nipples
to amber beads,
it shakes the frail rigging
of her ribs.
I can see her drowned
body in the bog,
the weighing stone,
the floating rods and boughs.
Under which at fist
she was a barked sapling
that is dug up
oak-bone, brain-firkin:
her shaved head
like a stubble of black corn,
her blindfold a soiled bandage,
her noose a ring
to store
the memories of love.
Little adulteress,
before they punished you
you were flaxen-haired,
undernourished, and your
tar-black face was beautiful.
My poor scapegoat,
I almost love you
but would have cast, I know,
the stones of silence.
I am the artful voyeur
of your brain’s exposed
and darkened combs,
your muscles’ webbing
and all your numbered bones:
I who have stood dumb
when your betraying sisters,
cauled in tar,
wept by the railings,
who would connive
in civilized outrage
yet understand the exact
and tribal, intimate revenge.

Castigo
(Versión Miguel A. Montezanti)
Puedo sentir el tirón
del dogal en su nuca
y el viento azotándole
el frente desnudado.
Le sopla en los pezones
como cuentas de ámbar
conmueve el enrejado
de sus costillas frágiles.
Puedo ver que está ahogado
su cuerpo en el pantano
la piedra. Contrapeso,
los arbustos flotando.
Bajo los cuales ella
fue al principio un retoño
exhumado, un huesito
de encina, un barrilito
su cabeza afeitada
como negro rastrojo
y sus ojos vendados
de tierra y un anillo
su dogal, conservando
memorias del amor.
Mi adúltera pequeña
antes de tu castigo
con tu pelo pajizo
estabas desnutrida
y era bella tu cara
tan negra como brea.
Pobre chivo expiatorio.
Yo casi que te amo
pero hubiera lanzado
las piedras del silencio.
Soy el voyeur astuto
de los peines expuestos
de tu cerebro oscuro
y tu urdimbre de músculos
tus huesos numerados.
Yo, que me estaba mudo
mirando a tus traidoras
hermanas, embreadas
llorando junto al cerco,
que tendría connivencia
de atroz civilizado
y aún así entendería
la íntima venganza tribal.
